Protein

A diet rich in protein was all the rage for awhile until most people realized that a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates is much better for you overall.

The reason that a high-protein and no or low-carb diet is unhealthy is because this type of food intake is likely very high in fat and cholesterol, which can damage your heart and overtax your digestive system.

A protein at its most base description is an organic compound made of amino acids. They have the capacity to nourish and produce energy, though they take a lot of water to break down in the digestive system. High in vitamins and minerals like iron, protein is fairly easy to get and must be consumed daily, as it is a necessary part of every cellular process.

Examples of good food sources would include eggs, chicken, fish, red meat and cheese.

Vegetarians, especially those that don't consume dairy products are at risk for not getting enough of this necessary nutrient into their system. This can lead to iron deficiency, a condition called anemia that can affect many aspects of your health.

This nutrient, though necessary is usually high in fat and/or cholesterol. Therefore, most nutritionists suggest you watch your cooking method and balance it out with a good mixture of fruits, veggies and carbohydrates. Doing so will allow you to lead a healthier lifestyle and not have to go on fad diets such as the low or no-carb craze that swept the nation at one point. Balance and moderation for this nutrient is the way to a healthy heart and body.
