Body Shape

Looking at your body shape is a great indicator of health. Where you carry your weight can determine tour risk of disease.

If you are at risk, you can work to change your body shape with diet and exercise.

The first thing to look at is your waist size. Ideally, women want to aim for is waist circumference less than 36 inches, for men less than 40 inches. Let's have a look at the different body shapes and some of the potential risks:

  • Chili- You are typically tall and thin all over. You may be at risk for health problems as you are considered underweight.

  • Pear -This is a healthy body. With this type, any excess fat is stored under the skin around the bottom, hips and thighs, which is less harmful to health than having an apple shape.

  • Pear-Apple - You carry some weight in both your abdomen and hips. Try not to gain any additional weight as it may show in your waist area which is more harmful to your health.

  • Apple -Excess fat is stored deep below the skin in the abdominal area, which will increase your risk of serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, and cancer. Speak to your doctor about starting an exercise program.
