Martial Arts

The all encompassing term 'martial arts' covers many different types of sport and exercise that are used all over the world for self protection, competition and exercise.

Many of these are steeped in tradition and are great for any age to learn about defending themselves while getting into great shape at the same time.

There are so many forms of martial arts that it would be impossible to cover them all here but some of the most popular that you may find at your local gym or workout center include karate, kickboxing, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Jousting, wrestling, Aikido, Krav Maga, Kenpo, mixed martial arts, Capoeira and many others. None of these forms of martial arts are exactly alike but all of them will allow you to workout all your major muscle groups as you learn the steps, techniques and moves of each one.

Many also offer special cardio martial arts classes that focus on technique while incorporating moves or variations on moves to give your heart a better workout than using the tradition techniques alone.

Though there is no special equipment necessarily needed to partake in any of these, most like to do this type of exercise in baggy, comfortable clothes. Many of the moves, from simple to complicated, require a long range of motion that more fitting outfits could prevent you from doing properly. Special shoes can be used, though most prefer to be barefoot. Mats are often used to protect you should you fall while practicing, though this is rare unless you are sparring. In fact, you will find that in order to prevent possible injury many classes do not have sparring unless you are competing, making this a fun and safe way to stay in shape.
