Mind & body classes

Can exercise classes combine mind and body? While many make no attempt to do so - there's not much that's spiritual in your spinning or cardio funk class.

There are others that incorporate spiritual elements within the class to provide a more satisfying experience for both mind and body.

The obvious example of a class that combines mind and body is yoga. Although there are some more hard core workout styles that emphasis conditioning more, most yoga classes have a strong spiritual element.

Yoga is an ancient practice - over 7000 years old - that aims to reshape not just your body, but your whole life. Rather than just a way to get in shape, it aims to take you on a journey from your head to your heart.

Those who practice regularly report increased feelings of happiness, contentment and peace. This is achieved through the combination of the poses (asanas), breathing (pranayama) and meditation elements.

However, this is far from the only activity that taps into these elements.

Although they are often associated with the more physical elements, many martial arts classes are very spiritual, teaching students how to tap into their chi, or basic life energy.

If you have previously found exercise to be a bit soulless, or have something missing, you might want to try one of these more spiritual options.
