Boxing

You do not have to be a professional athlete to reap the benefits of boxing as a workout.

Although many would think that boxing is a brutal sport and would provide very little benefit to the average exerciser, nothing could be further from the truth.

There is a reason why prize fighters sweat so profusely and have such well-defined bodies- and anyone can get similar results, without the professional matches of course.

Boxing provides both a great cardio workout and a lot of muscular toning as well. The cardio comes from the footwork involved when trying to evade an opponent. Though if you take up boxing as a workout you may never face an actual opponent, you are still taught techniques that you would use in an actual match in the ring- even if you only face a punching bag as your 'opponent.' The bobbing and weaving associated with the footwork, the lateral movement and having to stay on your toes at almost all times makes a great heart-friendly workout.

The types of punches you use are what help to define not only your arm muscles, but also your back and trunk muscles as well. In fact, this type of sport will help your core to make your entire body stronger. Short and fast jabs are cardio and muscle intensive, while also toning your shoulders as well for a lean look. Upper and undercuts workout back muscles and crosses and hooks also give your back and abs strength training.

If you take this up for exercise in a gym you will always wear gloves and a face mask to minimize any risk of injury, unlike professionals who only wear gloves. Though these are usually provided for you, you can also bring your own for sanitary reasons.
