Diabetes

Are you one of the many people who suffer from Diabetes? Diabetes is a life-altering illness and the more you know about the illness, the better you'll be able to adapt to its special requirements.

Diabetes is what happens when the body isn't able to produce the proper levels of insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for making the blood sugar, or glucose as it's technically called, that enters the cells and provides energy for the body.

Diabetes comes in two forms, Type 1 and Type 2, and each requires different types of treatment. The more you know about your particular type of Diabetes, the more normal a life you'll be able to lead.

The illness is classified as Type 1 if the body can't produce insulin at all, and Type 2 if the body can only produce small amounts. Type 1 of this illness occurs spontaneously in people before the age of 40. It is the rarest form of the illlness, and generally affects 5-15% of the population. There is no cure for this form of the illness, but sufferers usually live fairly normal lives if they have insulin injections and follow proper dietary and treatment requirements.

Type 2 is generally linked with being overweight, and usually appears in people over the age of 40, though it can be seen in African/ Caribbean and South Asian people over the age of 25. This form of the illness is usually combated by a special program of diet and exercise that helps to get the individual down to a healthier weight, so that the body can regulate its sugar levels better.

Talking to your doctor about your particular body type, fitness level, and the form of the illness that you are suffering from can help you understand what kind of treatment is right for you. Doctors can also help you transform your diet so that you will be working with, rather than against your illness.
