Effects of Stress

I'm sure you've experienced the effects of stress before. You are tired, cranky and just do not want to do anything but lie in front of the TV and relax.

You can tell how the effects of stress change your daily moods but do you know what it is doing to your body?

When you are under a lot off pressure your body releases a hormone called cortisol. This is a catabolic hormone meaning that it will break down muscle tissue and use it for energy. This is one of the most negative effects of stress that you may see happen to your body. With a reduced muscle mass you could start gaining weight and becoming weaker. Additionally, cortisol causes us to naturally crave more carbohydrate rich foods thus gaining more weight could become an issue. To compound on this, with cortisol present in the body, you are more likely to store this additional fat around the waist.

So as you can see, cortisol release is a situation you definitely want to avoid.

Another problem you may see is a constant feeling of fatigue. When there are many things bothering us in our lives it tends to wear on us mentally and this could wind up sending you into a depression if left to go on long enough. If you notice yourself starting to feel more tired on a daily basis it is a good idea to look at what it's root cause could be. If you aren't taking enough time to relax then you need to make time for that. If you don't the consequences could be much more severe than you realize.

Remember that relaxing doesn't have to be lying on the couch watching TV, it can be anything that you feel fulfills your passions. You should be making an effort to do this on a daily basis if you want to start living a full and happy life.
