Stress Symptoms

It is very important that you pay attention to any stress symptoms you begin to show so you do not risk experiencing a more significant health threat such as depression or burnout.

Stress symptoms can vary from person to person as well as from situation to situation. There are some general stress symptoms that you should be aware of however.

These include:

  • feeling more tired than usual
  • neck pain or tension in the neck muscles
  • feelings of being overwhelmed
  • headaches
  • indigestion
  • loss of appetite; or in some, a gain in appetite
  • frequent colds or flu
  • increased use of alcohol or other stimulant or depressant drugs (depends on the particular individual which one they choose to use)
  • indecisiveness
  • restlessness
  • loss of motivation

If you begin to notice yourself experiencing any of these it is a good idea to take a look at your current life situation and see if maybe you are either trying to take on too many projects at once or if what you are doing is not personally fulfilling to you.

If not taken care of as stated above you can start to experience symptoms of burnout and physical exhaustion. This occurs due to a system called the General Adaptation Syndrome. First comes 'alarm' and this is when your body first experiences the demanding situation. Upon recognition of this you then try to fight it in a process called 'resistance'. If you cannot over come it however, then you move into the 'exhaustion' phase where the body gives out and negative effects are seen. This stage can take considerable time to overcome which is why preventing it before it occurs is your best choice.

If proper relaxation techniques are used you can stop any of the above warning signs before they start. Try to start dedicating at least 10 minutes of your day to doing something you find enjoyable that will make you feel better about your own life and the activities in it.

If you feel like you have too much going on do not be scared to let something go or ask for help. When it's both your mental and physical health at stake it is not something that should be overlooked.
